If you don’t have unlimited data and you suddenly need to use a large amount of it, the overage fees can hurt. The cost per gigabyte over your limit can be very high. Verizon has introduced a new service called PopData which solves this issue in a surprisingly reasonable way.
PopData offers you unlimited 4G LTE data for a short period of time. You can get 30 minutes for $2 and 60 minutes for $3. Considering how much data you can use in that timeframe, that’s a reasonable price. If you don’t use much data overall but need to use a bunch at times for business or travel, this is a great way to save some money.
Of course, there are limitations. The network congestion in your area dictates whether PopData is available at the moment (a congested network can mean PopData won’t be available), and it doesn’t seem like it applies to tethering. It can be used on Android smartphones, iPhones, and iPads but not mobile hotspots or Android tablets.
If you want to give it a shot, the option seems to be live in the My Verizon app. It’s unexpected for Verizon to announce such a reasonable and helpful service where data is actually cheap. But that’s just my opinion, let us know what you think in the comments!
